Bertie Reader was born in Fordham (Newmarket Q4-1893 3B:517 ), son of John and Honor READER (née ARNOLD).
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Carter Street, Fordham with his father John READER [51] coal merchant; his mother Honor [50]; brothers Arthur [18] coal labourer, George [16] Great Eastern Railway porter, Ernest [14] coal labourer and Herbert [12]. All were born in Fordham. 1911 census...Aged 17, assisting in father's business, he was at Carter Street, Fordham with his parents, brothers George and Herbert (both assisting in father's business, and niece Hilda [18] born Fordham (probably the daughter of his brother Albert who married Mary Ann PITCHES. He married Annie E STEADMAN [12-2-1894] in 1914 (Newmarket 3b:1291). Their daughter Ivy Honour was born 13-4-1915.They lived at Mill Lane but later his widow moved to Sydney Villa, London Road, Dunton Green |
He enlisted in Newmarket.
The 9th Loyal North Lancashires were part of 74th Brigade in the Aisne / Chemin des Dames battle 27th May -6th June 1918. The battalion had 47 killed that day, only two have identified graves, the rest are all named on the Soissons memorial (in regiment/rank/surname order).
